?Sunderland have confirmed that midfielder Jan Kirchhoff is set for another spell on the sidelines after suffering a reoccurrence of his knee injury which has kept him out for the majority of the season.
Kirchhoff underwent an operation on his knee cartilage back in December, the last time he played for the first team, with Sunderland boss David Moyes hoping he would return in April to help see the season out, but the club confirmed in a statement on their official website that this fresh injury will keep him out for another month at least.
The midfielder began his comeback two weeks ago when he featured in a Under-23 game between the Black Cats and Manchester United. Moyes revealed however that after playing for just over an hour he suffered a reaction to his injury.
With his knee swelling up he was forced off and after an operation the surgeon advised that he would be out for at least four weeks, with six being the more likely time period.

He said: “It’s not good.
“It looks like it’s going to keep him out for a minimum of six weeks. He came back and played in the reserves against Manchester United about two weeks ago, his knee swelled up immediately after the game.
“He only trained for a couple of days and then pulled out. He has been back to see the surgeon and I don’t think there is any damage, but it is going to take longer than we thought to heal. It’s a lateral meniscus on the outside and it just takes a little bit more time, but we’re running out of time here and we need the injured players back.”
With just eight weeks of the current campaign remaining the blow could keep Kirchhoff out for the rest of the season, but Moyes is hopeful that he can still utilise German this season.
“I don’t know where that [his injury] takes us to, but it might be too close to the end of the season,” he added. “We might be able to use him in one or two games, but we will have to see.
