?Sunderland could be set to lose star man Jermain Defoe on a free transfer, if they are relegated from the Premier League this term. A clause in the 34-year-old’s contract enables him to leave the Stadium of Light for nothing, and a host of top flight clubs are likely to be interested, according to ?The Daily Mail.
The Black Cats are currently bottom of the Premier League with just 20 points and have ten games remaining. They’re currently seven points adrift off Swansea in 17th with the signs looking ominous for David Moyes’ side.
Defoe has remained Sunderland’s brightest light this term with 14 league goals to his name, also enjoying a goalscoring return for the national side on Sunday with England. Former clubs West Ham and Bournemouth have previously declared an interest but the Wearsiders rebuffed bids on those occasions.
With that said, interest is expected to be generated from a number of Premier League clubs after Defoe’s return to the national fold. Scoring England’s first in their 2-0 win over Lithuania, the talk surrounding the ex-Tottenham hitman has centred around his continued form which has got better with age.
It’s something of a rarity to see in modern football and Sunderland will be hopeful Defoe’s goals can pull off another unlikely escape. The striker has formerly hinted that he will be forced to leave if the Black Cats go down.
Nonetheless, if that outcome prevails, it will surely be something the Sunderland fans can’t begrudge after the efforts of Defoe since he signed for them in 2015.
