Sunderland are languishing at the bottom of the table after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Watford, after which Moyes made the comments in the interview. The Black Cats are eight points from safety with nine games of the season remaining, without a win in five games.

The club are believed to be hopeful of keeping Moyes in a potential Championship promotion campaign, although recent events have cast major doubts over his future.

“I deeply regret the comments I made,” Moyes said in his apology. “That’s certainly not the person I am. I’ve accepted the mistake. I spoke to the BBC reporter, who accepted my apology.”
