?Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has called on his teammates to “show pride”, as they attempt to pull off a near-miraculous escape from relegation.

The Black Cats are eight points from safety after Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat against Leicester, without a win in five games.

Cattermole has admitted the situation is growing ever more bleak, but pointed towards Sunday’s game against Manchester United as a chance to prove the club’s doubters wrong.

“It looks very tough but you don’t become a footballer by shying away from things,” Cattermole said after the loss at Leicester, via ?the Daily Mail.

“Everyone has that drive, we need to look forward to Sunday, get ourselves going and show how much we care about the position we’re in.

“We’ve got another game on Sunday, we have to show some pride, stand up and find out what we’re all about.

“We can’t make any excuses, I thought we were bang at it and we played well at the champions. We felt we were the better team but we’re walking away with nothing.”

?Cattermole made his first start since September against Leicester, and only his fourth appearance of the season after a hip injury.

He added: “I felt fine, I’ve felt great in the last couple of weeks. It’s tough coming back in the position we’re in but I’ll rise to it and give my best.”

Sunderland have recorded just five wins all season, and now have just eight games remaining to pull of a seemingly impossible escape.
