?Former Liverpool and Sunderland defender Phil Babb has claimed that the Reds should sign Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford in order to solve their goalkeeping problem.
The Merseysiders have struggled in recent seasons with goalkeepers, since the decline and departure of Pepe Reina. After Simon Mignolet came under scrutiny for poor displays, the summer acquisition of Loris Karius was supposed to be the signing to put an end to their troubles.
However, Karius hasn’t worked out quite the way he was intended to and has had to make do with watching from the sidelines in recent games.
“People talk about Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation – I think Pickford would be a great signing for Liverpool.” Babb told the Sunderland Chronicle.
“I was speaking to Chris Kirkland, who has worked with him and he knows the goalkeeping staff up at Sunderland and he said he is one of the best goalkeepers he has ever seen and he is just going to get better and better.”
Pickford has been a shining star in a Sunderland side that has had a difficult season. The 22-year-old can boast the second highest number of saves in the Premier League this season, joint highest number of claims, and joint second highest number of successful punches this campaign.
While a move to Liverpool could work out for the potential future England number one, his young age could easily see him become the second string keeper at Anfield.
As it looks ever more likely that Sunderland will face relegation this season, it would be important for Pickford to stay in the top flight, but perhaps it might be too soon for the youngster to join a top six team.
