Prolific Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe was seen ‘patiently waiting’ by the Stadium of Light tunnel on Sunday, before appearing to give Man Utd youngster Marcus Rashford his match-day shirt, according to ?chief football writer for The Times, Henry Winter.

Defoe, 34, has become an overnight national treasure, being commended for his selfless work with cancer-suffering child ?Bradley Lowery.

The recently recalled England striker was on the wrong side of a three goal hammering at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, a result that leaves Sunderland 10 points away from safety.

But Defoe didn’t let the thrashing dampen his spirits, as he waited patiently by the tunnel to give Marcus Rashford a few words of advice, and his match-day shirt.

Rashford has enjoyed a whirlwind 12 months since making his debut for United in a 3-2 victory over Arsenal, earning an England call-up for his goalscoring ability and pacy style of play.

His rise to the top mirrors that of Defoe, who came through the ranks at West Ham before moving to London rivals Tottenham in 2004, going on to score 157 Premier League goals thereafter.

Rashford scored United’s third and final goal at the Stadium of Light, netting his eighth goal of the season and his first goal in nine games.
