West Ham Star Proudly Recalls 'Unforgettable' Premier League Debut for Prior Club

New West Ham defender Jose Fonte has opened up on the emotions he felt when playing his first-ever Premier League match, via ?Twitter.

The Portugal international joined Southampton in 2010, spending seven years at St Mary’s before moving to West Ham in January, but still has very fond memories of his time at a Saint.

“Impossible to forget,” he said of the match, which took place in August of 2012. “It was at Man City when Man City just won the title.

“We went up with Southampton, and on that day I remember that we were losing. We started the game a bit nervous, we conceded an early goal.

“I remember Rickie Lambert didn’t start that game, but when he came on we managed to equalise. And with 15 minutes to go we were winning at the Emirates against the champions, but in the end we didn’t manage to hang on and we lost 3-2.

“But there was clearly joy celebrations on that second goal that we scored and the thought that we were going to beat the champions.”

He obviously means the Etihad and not Arsenal’s Emirates stadium. But we can excuse him because he is from Portugal.
