Former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has recalled exactly what it’s like to play on a cold and wet Thursday night in Stoke.
The Bulgarian striker spent eight years in the Premier League, scoring 126 goals for Spurs, United and Fulham in 305 appearances.
His spell in England saw him come up against the mighty Stoke City on more than one occasion, and it’s a memory that he doesn’t look back at too fondly.
?”I need to use specific words? Not too good. Because the weather was cold, the conditions, obviously the home crowd are very passionate at their team and they make you feel miserable.” ?Berbatov told Chris Kamara and Ben Shephard in an interview for Goals on Sunday.
He added: ?”Then you have the big lads at the back kicking you all the time, so it was not a good experience. I think if you ask other players they will tell you the same thing. But it’s working for them [Stoke], so you know.”
Berbatov is currently a free agent after being released by Greek club PAOK at the end of last season, and although he looked set to join Premier League bottom club Sunderland, a move fell through.
“I want to play and to be honest I had a couple of conversations with managers, even the Sunderland one,” ?he continued. “But in the end nothing happened. Of course [I wanted to join Sunderland], at this stage of my life it’s only about football now.
“Just to play a little bit more, one more game or one more year. To enjoy my team-mates, the football, the pitch, the fans. But as I said nothing came of it in the end.”
