?With several players putting in superb showings week in week out in the Premier League this season, some deserving players were always going to miss out on the PFA Player of the Year Award nominations.
N’Golo Kante, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Harry Kane were the six nominees when the list came out last week, and deservedly so. But there are a few other players who have played well enough throughout the campaign to receive a shout.
A 90min poll asked fans to vote for the player whom they thought was the most deserving out of those who missed out, and the name Dele Alli was the resounding cry. Out of 142,340 voters, 44 per cent thought that the Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder should have made it on the shortlist ahead of someone else.
The 21-year-old has scored 20 goals and laid out five assists for the London side this season, and has been key to their exploits, if not the best player in the side.
Alli’s name was thought to be the most shocking of omissions when the shortlist was announced. But he did get nominated for the Young Player of the Year Award, along with teammate Kane, as well as
The Reds are unfortunate to lose him at this crucial stage of the campaign, but they look set to claim a Champions League despite the setback.
Chelsea defender David Luiz came in next, but with just seven per cent of the votes. Luiz returned to Stamford Bridge after a two-year spell with French champions Paris Saint-Germain, and was thought to be a disaster of a transfer. He has been playing injured ever since Sergio Aguero’s tackle nearly broke his leg in half way back in December, so he does deserve a bit of slack – although Chelsea have to win the title first.
Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson took up five per cent, having been involved in 20 goals so far this season, scoring nine and assisting 11 for the Welsh side.
Other top performers Tom Heaton and Idrissa Gueye both got voted in with four per cent to round things up.
