Stoke City Boss Mark Hughes Urges Misfiring Striker to 'Be More Selfish'

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has told Sadio Berahino to ‘be more selfish’ in light of his recent goalscoring drought.

The 23-year-old hasn’t scored since joining the Potters in a £12m deal from West Brom in January, missing two guilt-edged opportunities in the 2-0 defeat against Swansea on Saturday.

The second chance was from just a couple of yards out after he attempted to score from Peter Crouch’s knockdown, but his tame header went straight into the arms of Swansea goalkeeper Fabianski.

Speaking after the defeat, as quoted by the ?Mirror, Hughes said: “He might be short on confidence. He just needs that one break where the ball falls to him in the box and he can get a strike on goal.

“If that goes in then he’s off and running. All strikers need that. He’s probably putting himself in positions where it’s not his natural game because he wants to help the team.

“That’s always admirable, but sometimes as a striker you want them to have a selfish streak, ignore everyone else and put your foot through it.”

The Potters are now 11th in the Premier League with four games left to play, eight points above the relegation zone and 19 points away from the top-six.
