Swansea and Hull Could Face 39th Game Play-Off to Remain in the Premier League Next Season

?There is a possibility that the Premier League season will be extended to a 39th game if Hull City and Swansea City both finish on the same points, goal difference and goals scored.

According to ?The Guardian, the Premier League already have rules in place for if this extraordinary and unprecedented situation was to happen.

Hull City v Swansea City - Premier League

The Premier League rules state: “If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board.”

Hull are 17th in the Premier League table, only two points above Swansea with three games remaining for both sides. Hull’s goal difference is -31, compared to Swansea’s -29 but the Welsh club have scored four goals more.

There is certainly a possibility that those statistics could become identical after the final three games and the Premier League would be forced into having a 39th game of the season. The game would be played at a neutral ground with another season in the English top flight at stake.
