Blues Defender 'Will Not' Be Used as Bargaining Chip in Chelsea Move for Virgil van Dijk

Andreas Christiansen’s father has insisted that the Chelsea defender will not be used as a bargaining chip in the Blues’ chase for Virgil van Dijk in the summer, saying that the 21-year-old has a regular role to play in the club’s starting lineup.

The Dane is will return to Chelsea this sumer after two years on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, having impressed during his time in the Bundesliga.

Chelsea Target Van Dijk

Speaking to Danish newspaper ?Ekstra Bladet Sten Christiansen said: “Andreas will not be used in a barter and play for Southampton. There are no ways for this to happen. Andreas should not sit on the bench. He has played solidly for two seasons. Therefore, it is also planned for the future that he will play every week.”

Chelsea have been keeping close tabs on Van Dijk since he established himself as one of the league’s best defenders at the heart of Southampton’s defender, and Conte is keen to add the Dutch centre-back to his ranks to ensure that the competition for places remains high.

The Blues had been rumoured to be considering a move involving Christiansen – on loan or otherwise – for the Saints defender, despite the season-ending ankle injury he picked up back in January.

Shakespeare Eyes Christensen

Leicester also are interested in Christensen, but his father’s comments may put them off making a move for the Denmark international.

Christiansen could be facing a straight fight with Kurt Zouma to be the long-term successor to the ageing Gary Cahill at the heart of the club’s defence, with Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz well established.
