Allen has stated that he harbored doubts about his ability to play the new position before this season started, according to Sky Sports. The Welsh midfielder has scored seven goals this season and has shown that he is more than capable of playing there.
Playing in this position, Allen has not only stressed how vital it is that he gets assists, but also the importance of scoring goals: “Playing that position it is one of the things you are expected to do.”
Prior to this season, he had not been renowned for his goalscoring prowess. Before the start of this campaign, throughout his whole career, he had only ever scored 15 goals.
Previously he had been a holding player both for his club and his country. He was pivotal in the deeper role for Wales during Euro 2016, where they reached the Semi Finals. In his limited appearances for Liverpool, manager Klopp had also deployed him as a defensive midfield player.
He has been one of the few stars in a Stoke team that has greatly underperformed this season.
Languishing in 13th place Stoke have failed to reach the heights experienced last year when they finished 9th. With the ease that he is now playing this position, we can expect a lot more from Allen next season.
