Claude Puel’s Southampton were beaten by a resurgent Arsenal 2-0 on Wednesday night, extending their winless run which dates back to April 8, when the Saints recorded a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.
The’ recent worrying lapse in form has warranted the club, according to a report provided by Independent, to pinpoint two potential replacements to take the helm next season and dismiss Puel.
Hull City’s Marco Silva and Sheffield Wednesday’s Carlos Carvalhal are apparently the names in the frame to replace Puel, who has come under scrutiny as of late, due to his squad’s domestic stutter.
The Frenchman’s position at Southampton will be reviewed at the end of the 2016/17 campaign, and the club hierarchy will not make a defining decision upon his future until then.
However, the report suggest the 55-year-old boss is right to fear for his job at St. Mary’s, as his current employers have already started an initial recruitment process.
Silva has impressed during his short stint on English soil so far. Hull’s Portuguese boss is young, adaptable, hungry, and could ultimately leave the relegation battlers, if they drop to the Championship, after having a ‘break clause’ added into the 18-month contract which he signed in January.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Carvalhal still has ambitions to steer his formidable Owls towards the hallowed Premier League, with his men preparing to take on Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-offs.
He is also a Portuguese national, and will allegedly refuse to indulge in any contractual offer from Wednesday at the moment, preferring to decide upon his future when the play-offs are finished – promoted or not.
