?Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has described Liverpool’s current squad as the worst he’s ever played against At Anfield.
Barton is suspended from all football activity at the moment, but that certainly hasn’t stopped him from talking about the game.
And being part of the team that lost 2-1 away to the Reds back in March, he said it was the most exploitable Liverpool defence he has come up against in all his years.
Burnley recorded a 2-0 home victory over Jurgen Klopp’s men very early in the season, and you could argue that the victory spurred them on to actually remain in the Premier League for more than one season after gaining promotion.
But Barton wasn’t in the side, as he was still at Rangers: “I played against them a couple of weeks ago and it is arguably the worst Liverpool side I have played against at Anfield”, he said on BT Sport (H/T the ?Mirror).
“
“But they didn’t have the same level of conviction that they seem to have over the course of my career.
“There were certain things about the team in the key components of the team which you would expect them to have like the defensive structure and solidity through the middle of the park.
“You can dress that up however you like, they have been very good going forward with the acquisition of Mane.
“But defensively the keeper is still an issue and they are playing Milner at left-back.
“They need to near enough go back out there and recruit a new back four with only Clyne that is solid in that position.”
Despite not being strong enough for Barton’s liking, the Reds cemented a top-four finish with a 3-0 win against Middlesbrough on the last day, and will be playing in Europe next season. The back line can surely use a bit of strengthening, however.
