Harry Kane will get his first chance to lead England out of the tunnel at Hampden Park, after manager Gareth Southgate named him captain ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland.
Kane and Southgate have yet to work with each other after injuries sidelined the Tottenham forward during previous qualifiers and friendlies. However, the pair have a history, as Southgate managed the 23-year-old when he was in charge of the under-21 squad.
Southgate said in a statement on the Football Association’s website that there were several options within the England team to choose from, but Kane’s mentality made him the perfect candidate to wear the captain’s arm band.
“We have several players who have excellent leadership qualities and Harry is a player we have worked with, with the Under-21s before.
“He’s got a terrific mentality and I know he is delighted to be leading the team.
“He finished the season in great form and any team would want a finisher of his quality in their side.”
Kane becomes the fifth captain to lead England – after Wayne Rooney, Jordan Henderson, Gary Cahill, and Joe Hart – since Southgate was named manager of the senior squad last year.
England will enter the match with an unbeaten record after winning four and drawing once in the opening five matches.
